Quotes

On her sexuality…

My mom took us to see this Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Houston Museum of Art when I was, like, 11. And all I did was stare at the boobs. There were boobs everywhere. … Museums were probably the root for me because it was free rein to stare at the beautiful bodies in all the paintings. I was obsessed with the Roman era for a long time, and half the ladies had a tit out. Thanks, mom, for my art education/investigation into the world of bisexuality!

I came out slowly. Here’s the thing: Some of the time, I’m in a couple that passes as straight. I could choose to stay in that straight-passing world, and that would be fine, except it doesn’t feel authentic.

On her personality…

In real life, I can’t bring myself to be rude most of the time. Sometimes it happens, but most of the time it hurts me to be rude to someone else because you never know what is happening with them that day. It might be a pain in your ass, but you just have no idea. It’s just better to err on the side of trying to be nice than exploding in somebody’s face and them saying, “My dog died this morning, so thanks for being a bitch.”

On acting…

I mean, it’s very important to me. I am a storyteller, first and foremost. That’s the thing that I love to do. That seems to be the thing that I’m best at doing, it reading something on a page and being able to sort of bring it to life.

It was really fun. When people are like “whoa, you’re so different in this movie,” sometimes I want to reply with that gif of the guy that just says “acting.” Because we’re all in such a reality TV world, we expect that the characters or the people we see on TV are going to be just like they are in real life.

On Brooklyn Nine-Nine…

It’s an awesome job working with them.  It’s really wonderful.  I really enjoy being around all of my cast mates and they’re family.  In general, these people are some of the kindest, most loving, funniest, smart people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.  Sometimes, I look around on set and I cannot believe my lucky stars.  I’m so utterly grateful to be a part of that team—that ensemble.

I think both. I mean, I’m hopeful that I’ve picked up from my colleagues, coworkers, their amazing skills. I mean, Jesus, I’d be an idiot if I wasn’t trying to press up with much as I could because I’m around people that are absolutely geniuses in their own field. I mean, talk about someone who’s brilliant, brilliant, brilliantly smart, Chelsea Peretti is an amazing person to be around. She’s just really smart, fast, and she has so many amazing insights about not only the work, but being a human and a woman in this industry

Yeah, Rosa’s very different than I am. I’m sort of a socially inept and awkward person most of the time. And at the base of her core personality though I think she’s pretty socially inept too. She just puts on a very big armor.
