Stephanie Beatriz on Directing Her First Brooklyn Nine-Nine Episode: ‘I Asked Myself, What Would Ava DuVernay Do?’

Posted by renee on 03 March 2019 with 0 Comments

This week NBC will air an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine titled “He Said, She Said.” It will feel a lot like every episode of B99—funny and fast-moving, a snappy half-hour sitcom. But it’s special to me because it features the characters of Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) investigating a case that deals with the #MeToo movement.

It will also be the first episode of television I directed.

If you follow the news, then you know the show got canceled on Fox last year. All seemed lost, but then a very Hollywood turn of events happened and NBC swooped in to bring us back for another season. That’s when a very loud voice in my head said something terrifying: You should ask to direct.

Over the course of working on our sitcom, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate and work with many directors. The vast majority of them were men, and that’s simply because there are far more men than women in the Directors Guild of America. There are even fewer members of the DGA who are women of color. I started having a very strong feeling that I had a point of view that could add something to the work that was happening on television, that my voice and sensibilities and sensitivities and brain could add something to a show and help tell a story.

LA Times Interview: “‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s’ Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero make their TV directorial debuts”

Posted by renee on 03 March 2019 with 0 Comments

Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are sitting alfresco at a Hollywood restaurant on a windy February afternoon uttering phrases pretty common in conversations between women who are seeking new challenges in their work.

“Am I allowed to ask?”

“I don’t want to ruffle any feathers.”

The pair are reflecting on the mental gymnastics of self-doubt that went into making the leap behind the camera this season. After playing Detectives Rosa Diaz (Beatriz) and Amy Santiago (Fumero) for more than 100 episodes, the actresses were ready to tackle new avenues for growth on the job. And with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the series that cheated death and found new life on NBC — the time was now.

Spoiler alert: They did ask and no feathers were ruffled.

Interview: MTV “Stephanie Beatriz on How the #metoo Episode of Brooklyn Nine-nine Came to Life”

Posted by renee on 03 March 2019 with 0 Comments

It’s been a big week for Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz. On the heels of NBC’s announcement that the show has been picked up for a seventh season, “He Said, She Said” — the episode Beatriz directed — aired on Thursday, February 28.

Her directorial debut, the episode is the show’s timely take on #MeToo and deals with the investigation of a smarmy finance executive accused of sexually harassing his coworker. Obviously, the case is a difficult one that mirrors the experiences of many women — something that wasn’t lost upon Beatriz, who made sure to treat the episode with immense care and respect.

Praising screenwriter Lang Fisher, creator Dan Goor, as well as the performances given by Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago and Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, for helping her execute this vision, Beatriz tells MTV News the experience was an absolute “thrill.” And though she admits she’s a bit nervous in terms of critical reception, she feels that the subject matter — as well as the fact that she’s at the helm of this episode as a queer Latinx woman — supersedes any potential hesitation.

Here, Beatriz opens up about navigating the intricacies of a sensitive episode like “He Said, She Said,” the meaning of infusing the episode with her point-of-view, and how she’s ready to claim her (well-deserved) seat at the table.
